Conservation

California is losing its rangeland to development at an alarming rate. Ranches are home to some of our state’s most valuable rangeland habitat and cultural resources. Founded in 1998, the California Rangeland Trust is a leading force in protecting these working ranches and the habitat they provide. With your support we can conserve the nearly 400,000 acres of privately owned resource-rich rangeland in our application files.

Community

As each acre of rangeland is converted to non-agricultural use, the economic base for rural communities, their social fabric and cultural legacy is lost, as well as the environmental benefits of open space, natural habitat and stewardship of California ranches.

The California Rangeland Trust recognizes that the environmental health of California’s rangelands and the economic health of rural communities are intertwined. The Trust provides and promotes alternative ways to safeguard the long-term viability and stewardship of rangeland agriculture and the conservation values those lands provide.

The Rangeland Trust works in partnership with landowners who want to preserve the integrity of their ranches and establish a lasting protection for its natural habitat through conservation easements. These men and women have built a lifestyle around the legacy of land stewardship that has been passed down to them for generations.

Trust

During its history, California Rangeland Trust has worked hard to gain the trust of California ranchers. The confidence ranchers now place in the Rangeland Trust is based upon the knowledge that our organization will provide strong resource preservation of rangeland along with the continuation of historic ranching traditions. As a result, California Rangeland Trust is the largest cattlemen’s land trust in California and has partnered on land transactions that have conserved over 183,000 acres for permanent rangeland protection.

Need

The ranches in our application files cover 25 counties in California. Twelve of these counties are ranked as California’s fastest growing counties and therefore face significant pressure of conversion from rangeland to development. A staggering eleven counties of these are located in the vast and unique California Central Valley.
