Varian V6 Ranch
Monterey & Fresno Counties
Matching rancher needs with conservation
California
Rangeland Trust worked with the landowner and The Trust for Public Land
on the acquisition of this 17,000-acre conservation easement, the centerpiece
of our Diablo Range Project. The Varian family requested that California
Rangeland Trust become the easement holder because the "organization
understands the needs of the ranching community because its creation has grown
from the grassroots of the agricultural world." In addition to being at
the center of one of the most productive grazing regions in the state, the
Varian property includes significant oak woodlands and other unique and
important natural values. Financial supporters of this project included the California
Wildlife Conservation Board, California Department of Transportation, and the
David and Lucile Packard Foundation. California Rangeland Trust will monitor
compliance with the easement and work with the Varian family to identify
private and government programs offering support for weed management, livestock
productivity and wildlife habitat improvements.
