East Sheridan Vernal Pool Preserve
Placer
County
Collaborative project protects critical
habitat amidst extreme
pressures from growth
In November 2005, California Rangeland
Trust, in partnership with Wildlands Inc., completed a land preservation
agreement that will permanently protect approximately 386 acres in Placer County,
one of the fastest growing counties in California
(Department of Finance 2004). The land
preservation project, known as the East Sheridan Vernal Pool Preserve, includes
a diverse range of conservation values including Swainson's hawk foraging
habitat, vernal pool and swale, seasonal marsh and grassland habitats. The land
within the Preserve has been and is currently used as a dry land cattle
pasture. Through carefully managed
grazing practices, the ranching operations will continue to harmoniously exist
with the surrounding natural habitat.
